Asked Questions about the Our Whole Lives Curricula
For more information
Our
lives are filled with blessings from God – the air we breathe, the water
we drink, the abundance of the land, and the blessing of relationships
that enrich our lives. God
made people in God’s own image, and gave us hearts and minds to engage
each other in healthy, meaningful relationships.
Our
Whole Lives (OWL) is a faith-based sexuality curriculum
developed by the United Church of Christ and the Unitarian Universalists.
Written by professional sexuality educators, the curriculum
provides accurate, age appropriate information to use with children and
youth to help them learn about human sexuality in affirming and supportive
settings.
The goals of Our
Whole Lives include providing accurate information about human
sexuality; helping young people understand their sexual attitudes in order
to develop positive attitudes and insights, increase esteem, understand
their family’s values, and acknowledge obligations to self and others;
helping young people build healthy relationship skills through
communication, decision-making, assertiveness and refusal skills; helping
young people exercise responsibility in who they are and how they relate
to others; and encouraging children and youth to put Christian faith and
sexuality information together.
The Our
Whole
Lives curriculum will be adapted to meet the unique aspects of
the camp setting – the gift of the beauty of nature around us, and the
gifts of community, trust, and honest conversation.
While the week’s schedule will be focused on the curriculum and
theme, this event will still have the “look and feel” of camp –
s’mores around the campfire, swimming in the lake,
silly games, meaningful worship at sunset overlooking Green Lake.
The Our
Whole Lives curriculum does not
replace parent involvement in helping inform and form their child’s
perspectives and attitudes. In
fact, we expect most parents will have many questions about this event –
questions about the curriculum, leadership, boundaries, expectations,
limitations – and so much more!
Please see our web site or
call our office (920-PILGRIM) for a brochure with specific details about
this event, as well as information for parents of participants.
We’ve talked about caring
for God’s earth at church camps across the country for decades.
We talk about the water, air, land, and the wonderful variety of
creatures who share this earth with us.
This week we’ll broaden this conversation and include caring for
each other in establishing healthy, respectful relationships.
