Camp AweSum Youth Camp – Registration Opens March 1, 2022 at 9:09am!
Camp AweSum Youth Camp is moving to Daycholah Center in 2022!!! Camp AweSum Youth will look a little different but the leadership will work to make sure the programming you have loved in the past is the same, with some enhancements. Campers will continue to be supported in a respect-based manner, by counselors and staff that use proactive sensory strategies and visual supports. With intentional programming, campers will continue to be able to try new activities, learn new skills, and engage with peers.
Camp AweSum Youth Camp residential summer camp for children with a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum. Campers are considered for Camp AweSum Youth Camp if they are independent with feeding, toileting, dressing skills, and do well with a 4 to 1 ratio of campers to counselor. All camper applications to Camp AweSum will be reviewed by an Autism Specialist and Occupational Therapist, in order to determine if they meet criteria to be successful in the camp environment. Youth camp welcomes nine to fifteen year old youths (as of June 1, 2022) for a fun-filled week of camp.
In addition to the typical camp offerings already stated, youth campers will enjoy activities like basket weaving, drumming, nature walks with a naturalist, a night hike, and a host of kid-friendly sensory-based activities.
Our vision is to provide an experience that enables campers to feel pride in learning new skills while being away from home. Campers will be with children their age, who share similar interests, skills, and wonderful gifts. Campers will learn new skills, gain confidence in being away from home, develop lifelong friendships, experience a summer camp without stress and anxiety, and be supported in all they attempt to do. Self esteem will soar, and friendships will burgeon at Camp AweSum!
The staff of Camp AweSum works to support the campers to enjoy camp to the best of their ability. Staff includes an RN 24 hours a day as well as occupational therapists, a physical therapist, and a music therapist. Among the counselors are licensed teachers and paraprofessionals with experience in Autism, graduate and undergraduate students, and parents of children on the autism spectrum. Additionally, all staff will pass a background and reference check and will receive training designed specifically for Camp AweSum.
Youth Camp 2021 – suspended
After much discernment, the Camp AweSum and UCCI leadership teams have made the difficult decision to suspend the Camp AweSum Youth program for Summer 2021.
We had been hopeful that with many modifications (such as shorter stays and smaller capacities) during another COVID year we would be in a spot where we could safely host Camp AweSum Youth Camp at Daycholah Center as Youth Camp is no longer held at Moon Beach. We are all so disappointed that this unfortunately will not happen in 2021. However, with the support of the Camp AweSum and UCCI leadership teams, we plan to host this amazing program in the summer of 2022 at Daycholah Center!
More information and exciting news about the Camp AweSum Youth program move to Daycholah Center in 2022 will be coming throughout this year so be sure to check our website often!
