    Susan, a Pennsylvania native, earned her BFA in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University. Residing in Lake Zurich, Illinois, for 24 years, she transitioned to full-time oil painting in 2002 after a successful career in illustration and graphic design. Susan’s artistic achievements include juried entries in prestigious shows like the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition, with awards from OPA Eastern Regional, Salon International, the American Impressionist Society, Plein Air Easton, and others.

    Her work is featured in prominent art publications such as Southwest Art, American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, International Artist, and American Artist magazines. Susan’s paintings adorn private and corporate collections globally, and she accepts portrait commissions. Notable memberships include Oil Painters of America (Signature Member), American Impressionist Society (Signature Member), and Portrait Society of America.

    Expressing her passion for the creative process, Susan says, “I love the discovery of how paint transforms a flat surface, evoking an emotional response. Painting in challenging situations adds a thrilling element of uncertainty, culminating in the delight of seeing the subject come to life!”

Painting Lifelike Animals with Susan Ploughe

Explore techniques that create fresh, lifelike paintings of a variety of animals. Learn to: Paint fur and feathers without obsessing over every detail · Mix the right colors, especially important for all-white or all-black animals · Choose an interesting point of view · Make eyes and other features look alive · Vary your brushwork for different effects · Tell a story with your painting. Open to students using oils, pastels, or acrylics (preferably slow-drying).
